The Ionian mode is essentially the same as the major scale, sharing all the same pitches and intervals. The main difference lies in their functional harmony; the major scale emphasizes tonic and dominant relationships, while the Ionian mode explores all pitches more seamlessly without strong tension and resolution.
Teaching the modes through music is an effective way to engage students in music theory. The piece uses F as the tonal center.
