Let’s all play Shortnin’ Bread
This swinging upbeat piece will excite your students. Shortnin Bread is a great motivational piece. It’s also perfect for helping early intermediate students capture the swing rhythm used in Jazz, Blues, and Gospel. This piece can be used as a recital or festival piece.
“Shortnin’ Bread” (also spelled “Shortenin’ Bread“, “Short’ nin’ Bread“, or “Sho’tnin’ Bread“) is a plantation song with African-American folk roots that date back at least to the 1890s. James Whitcomb Riley published a poem building on older lyrics in 1900. A folk version was published by E. C. Perrow in 1915. It is song number 4209 in the Roud Folk Song Index. Shortening bread refers to bread, made of cornmeal and/or flour and lard shortening. It should not be confused with shortbread. Wikipedia
Lyrics
Take out the flour, then you’ll be fed,
Mama’s little baby loves short’nin’ bread
Take out the flour, and when your through
She’s gonna make a little coffee too!
